Sinhala film Adaraneeya Kathawak screened to raise funds for community projects

The University of Kelaniya Alumni Association (UKAAC) faced a mild crisis when we planning to increase our social and community activities. Among other activities, we had to organize the inter-alumni cricket tournament last June.

The UKAAC does not charge a membership fee.

There were several meetings and many suggestions and finally the committee decided to screen a film to generate funds.

Within days several members were in touch with Sri Lankan friends and were able to find newly-released and highly-popular Adaraneeya Kathawa with a young new cast.

We had doubts whether the ticket sales would be good because summer is the season when Sri Lankan associations and individuals organize lot of functions like musical programmes, dances and other community programmes.

There was aggressive ticket selling by many Kelaniya alumni members while other university alumni associations and friends too were helpful in a big way.

The film was screened on October 15, 2016 and it was a huge success. There were several other entertainment programs in Toronto and the suburbs but we had a very good attendance and according to reports it was one of the few house-full shows in the recent history.
